A long time breeder of foundation Quarter Horses, Fred Gist, has died. We bought our stallion Berts Bayou from Fred. He was always a friendly man and could rattle off a pedigree like no one else.

Here is his obituary:

"Fred Graham Gist passed away unexpectedly at his ranch home on November 23, 2009.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 25, at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland, Texas.

He was born in Colorado City, Texas, on April 20, 1936, to Velma Graham and Fred Morgan Gist. His childhood was spent in the oil patch of the Permian Basin and on holidays at the family farm near Colorado City. He graduated from Midland High School in 1954 and in 1959 from the School of Petroleum Geology at Texas Tech University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Fred served a term in the army and was stationed at Fort Ord, California and Fort Belvoir, Virginia where he was a Specialist Fifth Class and assistant instructor in the Corp of Engineers School.

He was a geologist for Tenneco in Colorado and Oklahoma and later for Barron Kidd in Kentucky before becoming an independent geologist in Midland.

Fred was involved in ranching with his late parents and late brother, James Edward Gist, in Mora and Chavez Counties, New Mexico from 1959 until 2003. In Midland he married the former Elaine Conger Wood in 1971, and together they raised her two daughters by a previous marriage, Kimberly and Katherine, and a son, John Christopher Gist, who was born to them in 1972 in Midland.

With a life-long interest in agriculture and livestock, Fred and his wife raised registered Quarter Horses and Beefmaster Cattle on ranches at Goldsmith and in Burnet and Lampasas Counties, Texas. He was baptized in water in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins as an adult, according to Acts 2:38.

In 2003 Fred and his wife moved from Midland to their ranch near Lampasas, Texas.

Fred is survived by his wife, Elaine Conger Gist, and daughters, Kimberly Conger Skinner and husband, David, and Katherine Elise Magee and husband, Ken, of Jacksonville, Florida. Fred is also survived by his son, John Christopher Gist, of Lampasas Texas. Grandchildren surviving Fred include Ashley Elaine Hassel, Davis, Amy Katherine, Hampton and Reese Skinner and Maude and Blakeney Magee all of Jacksonville, Florida. He is also survived by Peggy Gist, the widow of his late brother James, and nieces Cindy Davis and Melinda Erramouspe and two grandnieces and two grandnephews.

Memorials may be directed to Texas Arms of Love, Post Office Box 5137, Midland, Texas 79704."

Buffalo Ranch Gives Official Statement

Shane Plummer, president of Buffalo Ranch in Fort Worth, Texas, has given an official statement regarding the guilty pleas of his dad, David Plummer, and brother, Spencer Plummer, in regards to the operation of a fraudulent tax shelter.

Shane's comments:

"Buffalo Ranch is not affected by the guilty pleas in Portland, Oregon on Monday. Buffalo Ranch is owned and operated by Shane Plummer and he is not going to be prosecuted.

"David Plummer, Spencer Plummer and Terry Green entered guilty pleas to one count of conspiracy. Each of them has been cooperating fully with the government for several months and have agreed to testify regarding the actions of others. They have been released on their own recognizance. Sentencing has been continued until after the government concludes its investigation, which could be several months. "Buffalo Ranch looks forward to continuing to serve its customers. The Industry should expect the same quality and level of service in the future. Paul emailed me and reminded me that I have not posted any recent post lately, lol. I am sorry, we have been remodeling our house and I have just not had a lot of extra time.

Lets see what has recently happened...we have had tons a rain! So much rain that our ponds that were "feet" low are now overflowing out into the pastures. So that is good.

We are getting ready to plant oats for winter pasture. Ordered 40 expensive round bales that should be in a week or so.

Had a pretty new all steel barn built in the open mare's pasture, now just need a real pond dug there as well, but that will have to wait now because of how wet it is.

Wizard will be leaving soon to his new home in the Pacific Northwest, we are excited for him.

My main computer crashed and my wonderful son Andrew fixed it! I was having an attack thinking I lost all of my pictures, lol.

We reserved our room for this year's NCHA Futurity in DFW, we will be there from Dec 10-13th. Ernie is doing really well in cutting training and we can't wait to see him this time next year!

We have been super hot and busy down here in Texas. We will be over 100 degrees today and possibly all week. We talked about how we have not had a break from the road since February, our breeding season has been tiring to say the least but much better than last year for sure.

This Friday we will be headed up to Stephenville to visit our stallion in cutting training with Jerry Olson. Ernie is doing well and I will try to get some good pictures while we are there. I have some stuff packed to take with us for Ernie, like a hanging feeder, 6 months of wormer, shot, mineral block & holder, fly neck band. I couldn't find my fly masks anywhere so I will stop and get him another.

I sent in the AQHA registrations for the last two colts born in May, we choose Bayou Montana (Monty) and Just Add Beef (Justin).

We desperately need rain, our pastures are pretty much burned up and gone, we will be putting out rounds for the horses and cows. This sucks, but everyone has to eat. Hay is sky rocketing as I write this and so is fuel. So another hard year to come for Texas.

We Will Miss You Polly

Donald "Polly" Hollar passed over the rainbow bridge on April 18, 2009. Polly was a very kind man, I loved to talk to him because he had a memory like an elephant if we were talking horses and pedigrees.

I last visited with him in person in December in Fort Worth at the NCHA Futurity, he looked wonderful and back to his old self. He was a walking book about every horse he owned and bred and sold over the years. The first horse that we owned that Polly bred was a red roan son of Peptos Legacy 198 and out of a daughter of Docs Budha. Then we purchased a mare from Polly at his last Blue Bonnet Sale in May 2008. Polly used to call her "Pet", we call her "Love", she is an own daughter of Docs Budha. We got really lucky because she came with a blue roan daughter of Mecom Blue and was bred back to his son's stallion Rey Jays A Hick.

Interesting…Tack Room Talk article in this months Quarter Horse News.

The two clones Playboys Ruby Too (Playboys Ruby) and Whats On Tap (Tap O Lena) although paid up to show in the BIG Futurity in December 2009 will not be shown by trainer Phil Rapp as earlier said. As of the middle of March 2009 he said that out of the 15 horses he has in training they rank at about 8-9. The owner of both clones Waco Bend Ranch, said that Ray Baldwin has interest in showing Palyboys Ruby Too in the Futurity Non Pro and that another trainer may show Whats On Tap in the Futurity Open.

Rapp says that so far the clones have seemed more like foals of the great mares and not clones of them. The Playboys Ruby clone is very trainable and wants to do everything you ask of her. But the Tap O Lena clone has been more challenging than the original to train, but he can see the originals athletic ability! Whats On Tap has had a set back in her training when she attempted to pull back when tied to a post and broke her jaw.

So now we will wait and see if the 3rd clone Doc’s Serendipity that is being trained and paid up to the Futurity actually shows up and competes. She was sold at the Western Bloodstock Futurity Sale as a yearling to the original clone’s breeder for 14k.

Weekly Update

Sandy is still holding on to her foal, I am hoping it is because she is baking on a shiny black coat for the new owner who has been waiting for this foal since last year.

Blossom is starting to bag up and Rose is just starting to have some edema in front of her udders. They were bred a day apart so their foals should come about the same time. Blossom is an experienced mom while this is Roses first foal. I always worry about the new moms because sometimes they don't understand what that thing is right after it is born, so we need to watch her closely to help her out with this baby.

I have spoken to Ernie's trainer and he is doing really well. He is excited about Ernie's progress so far, he has started him on the flag and Ernie took right to it. Hopefully we will have new video soon to share with everyone who is following him.

This last week I have been a busy bee painting a couple of bedrooms and they turned out really really nice, with new crown molding that I installed also. Now I am working on staging the rooms and cleaning the carpets.

Field Trip to Brenham

We took a couple of hours trip to Brenham to drop off a mare and foal to be bred and check in on another mare and foal that have been there for a couple of weeks already. This mare pictured was bred last week and now we are waiting to see if she is pregnant before we haul them back to the ranch. Fingers crossed that she takes on the first try! More details about it all after she is confirmed bred, I don't want to jinx it.

Weekend Update

We are very happy to report that we got lots of rain in the last four days and that we have temporarily suspended the rain dance for a while. It was a good rain that the pastures needed for sure! I hung out at the barn most of the weekend on foal watch and playing with Wizard (Bayou Magic). He is a hoot, I love him. We started calling him wizzer because he pees so much and was flooding his stall. By Sunday afternoon he was literally bouncing off the stall walls so we released him and his dam and Love to the back pasture. He was so happy to stretch his legs, sorry I didn’t have my camera, I could of gotten some really crazy shots of him jumping in the air celebrating his freedom.

We moved a bunch of horses around and this weekend plan to move Sandy and Blossom back down to the house pasture to foal. Because of the economy I have decided to only breed two mares to Bert this year. This weekend coming is WNV shots for everyone, Spring starts officially this week so we need to get to it. We are using two kinds of vaccines again this year the Ft Dodge DNA for breeding horses and the one shot Prevail (live virus) for open horses.

The weather man says it will be nice and warm this week, that is great for the babies and me. Wizard is filling out so nicely at just a week old and boy he loves to eat big time. He was trying to munch on his dam’s hay all weekend. Being with the babies is so refreshing and does my soul so much good, life is so much more real and in the minute with them. We all have so much stress in our lives everyday for various reasons and horses have a way of relieving that and it is like a breath of fresh air has been induced into my soul and helps the bad days melt away.

His full sister Bayou The Dream has been started under saddle with owner/trainer Nonie Cornett and doing great. His dam is our King Ranch bred mare El Beeline Mary (ggd of Hired Hand) and sired by our Bert/Oklahoma Star bred stallion Berts Bayou. He is a solid bay with no white. Farm Update

I am sorry I haven't posted much lately. I am going to make it an effort to get back and get better at it. We have been busy making road trips to Dallas and all over Texas as of late getting things done before the foals start arriving. Mary looks to be the closest although Love and Sandy could show her up and foal first. We have three foals due in March, two by Berts Bayou and one by Rey Jays A Hick. Then in May we have two due, one by Berts Bayou and the other by Blue Bayou Boon. Then in June we have one by Berts Bayou. So as you can read it will be a long foaling season and a busy breeding season. As this year we are sending a group of mares to Brenham to the Guzman Ranch to be bred by a repro specialist. We are breeding two mares at home to Berts Bayou also.

Ernie is doing well in training and hopefully we will have another video by the end of the month to share with everyone.

We have been cold, windy, and dry here. We are behind on rain for the year, so we will be doing some rain dancing here soon so the grass will come in nice for the mares and foals.

Ernie has been in training with Jerry Olson for 3 weeks now and we have our first video update, although we talk with Jerry at least once a week.

This is what today's update says:

"He is doing great!! He is so willing to learn and always wanting to please you..
He can move really nice so all that is left to see is if he has cow... It should not be much longer before he is ready to start working the string cow a little to learn the pattern.."

"You can see from the video that he is super sensitive..LOL Jerry accidently touches him with a spur instead of the calf of his leg...LOL"

We are really proud of our boy and pray he continues to do well in training.

Sunday was a nice day so I decided to grab my camera and take some pictures of our two dogs at the farm playing while we were busy working. The first picture is of Mattie, we got her from the SPCA about 5 years ago, she is nine now and going strong. And then the second picture is of our dogue Rojo that is just now 2 years old. We bought him from his breeder when he was 1 week old and he is such a joy and he LOVES the farm.

Road trip and New News

We made our road trip on Saturday. The day started out early, we left the farm at 7am to go to Bryan and pick up Ernie. When we arrived it was 7:45am and I wasn't sure if Nonie and Dana were awake so I went to the barn to get Ernie and load him. By the time I got Ernie's halter on and was about to lead him out of his stall, Nonie came walking in the barn with a big smile on his face. He came over and put his arm across Ernie's back and gave him a hug and pat. Then he took the lead rope from me and walked his student to the trailer to send him off to his next trainer on his journey to becoming a cutting horse. Ernie whinnied to Nonie as he shut the gate on the trailer. It was touching to see the bond they had created with each other in such a short amount of time (60days). Then we went inside to refill our mugs and get on the road. Nonie tells me as we enter the doorway that Ernie is going to be really good and if they don't like him to bring him back to him in 6 months and he will make him a hella roping horse. I just laughed and told him I will...

We made it to Stephenville at noon. We pulled into the drive and parked in front of the barn where Jerry and Kathy were working. We finally met them face to face after talking for a year and a half about Jerry training Ernie for us. Ernie unloaded like a champ and Jerry walked him to the barn. Ernie wasn't too sure where he was now, because it wasn't his pasture at home where he had lived since a weanling and it wasn't Nonie's barn where he had lived since December. So he whinnied and called all the horses that were turned out in the paddocks near the barn. We met some of the horses that Jerry is training and he talked about how they are doing and what the future plans are for them and their owners. We did get to meet the superstar colt he has there that is heading to a big name trainer soon. Then we all went to town and had a good meal together and talked for several more hours about what else? cutting. They invited us to come and spend the weekend anytime and get to see Jerry train and maybe get some cutting lessons in while we are there.

This morning we received our first report on how Ernie is doing and what Jerry's first impression is of him. It was a good first report!

We have been so busy I haven't had a chance to really give any updates here lately. Well since firing the drywall contractor I have taken on the task of finishing the walls myself and it is coming along real nice. Thank you lord for the Internet, I studied up on how to do it (which is pretty darn simple by the way) then I went to Lowes and bought what was needed and started to go to work. So far I have finished Andrew's room, repainted and textured the walls. Fixed a small hole in the foyer, need to sand and paint it still. Worked on the bathroom walls downstairs texturing them, need to sand, seal and paint. The upstairs bathroom is looking FAB, the new tile is all installed, grouted, the walls are retexured and sanded, now I need to seal and paint and that room will be finished! Then I have to texture our master bedroom ceiling and the laundry room ceiling. It sounds like a lot but because it is done in steps and they can't be rushed, it really is pretty simple stuff and so far everything looks great.

We went and visited Ernie last Saturday and he is doing awesome under saddle, Nonie is so ecstatic with him so yes that means he passed the test and will be headed to Stephenville very soon to meet Jerry his new cutting trainer. I can't wait to hear how Jerry likes him. I will get video sent to me on a regular basis that I will share with everyone and then I will take video and pictures when I visit him (hopefully on a monthly basis).

I talked with the new repro vet today and we had a great conversation, I got him up to speed with each mare and we discussed last years issues . He asked me what I did because he was surprised at my scope of knowledge and was sure I worked in the field. He did confirm he bred my mare Beloved Budha last year and gave me some additional information on her, all good news.

My friends in states north of Texas have been having terrible weather and we are praying for you all to stay safe and warm until these ice storms pass. Then one of my coworkers comes and tells me that we are expecting sleet tonight in Houston. I hope the weather clears up by this weekend and we get back to temps in the 60's because we have a road trip to make.

First USA clone to produce foal and show in NCHA Futurity later this year

The Doc’s Serendipity clone was ET'd and a recip mare is carrying her foal by High Brow Cat that is due in April of this year. The Doc’s Serendipity clone is currently in training with Jamie Beamer of Weatheford, TX and has already been entered into the 2009 Futurity. Her owner Janet Brown said that "She’s not particularly interested in a mechanical cow, but when a real cow is put in front of her, she goes right after it"...

This year's futurity will be the most interesting one because there will be three clones competing in December. I can't wait to watch all the action and see if the clones can live up to their namesakes the originals.

Gentlemen Send Roses, a Paint from Indiana;
Hot Lopin Sensation, a Quarter Horse from Kentucky;
Indian Artifacts, a Quarter Horse from Kentucky;
Invited Back, a Paint from Indiana;
Nanning 374, a Friesian from Wisconsin;
Potential Asset, a Quarter Horse from Texas;
Potential Investment, a Quarter Horse from Kentucky;
Repeated in Red, a Quarter Horse from Kentucky;
Zips Heaven Sent, a Paint from Indiana.

According to the USDA, there are 383 horses currently involved in the investigation. This includes 51 stallions (including the nine above) and 332 mares located in a total of 42 states. The 51 positive or exposed stallions are located in 12 states, and the 332 exposed mares are in 39 states. There are 97 exposed mares and one stallion still actively being traced.

Action Plan for Racing:
1. Maintain existing relationships with National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Racing Medication and Testing Consortium, Jockey Club Welfare and Safety Summit, Association of Racing Commissioners International Model Rules Program, etc., providing AQHA has a seat at the table to ensure consistency in animal welfare policies and regulations.
2. Communicate via AQHA publications, e-newsletters, racetrack daily programs, in-house TV and Web sites about racing's continued efforts to ensure the welfare of horses is paramount. Work through AQHA Public Policy Committee, state affiliates, state legislative initiatives, and specialists to influence public opinion.
3. Correspond with state racing commissions and NTRA communicating the objectives listed below with regard to animal welfare:
Advocate the use of safe equipment;
Conduct American Quarter Horse-specific research on toe grabs;
Conduct further American Quarter Horse-specific research on track surfaces regarding type of surface vs. type of injuries;
Develop a certification program for starters, assistant starters, jockeys, grooms, security personnel and other necessary designees as deemed necessary;
Support implementing an equine injury database at all racetracks for all breeds;
Endorse out-of-competition testing and support the continued testing for anabolic steroids at sale companies as a condition of consignment;
Endorse mandatory testing of claimed horses for anabolic steroids; and
Endorse and consolidate testing at accredited laboratories.

Action Plan for Breeding/Genetic Defects:
1. Have a breeders' summit and videotape to develop an educational DVD and/or power point presentation that could be used at Affiliate Workshop, World Show, All-American Quarter Horse Congress, alliance partner conventions, and other locations by AQHA members.
2. A "Welfare Link" for "America's Horse" weekly newsletter and the AQHA Web site has been created. It includes an animal welfare statement and links to welfare information in the AQHA rulebook and will also provide access to welfare articles covering different topics involving racing, showing, breeding, etc., as they become available.
3. Conduct breeders' seminar during AQHA Annual Convention
4. Expand current breeder referral program by establishing a "premium level" for those breeders who agree to test for genetic and infectious diseases (where applicable).

Action Plan for Shows:
1. Change Professional Horsemen's application for both race and show professionals to add a section to include an agreement to monitor humane treatment. Change the current policy for Professional Horsemen to have two members (increased from one) to discuss unacceptable training or inhumane treatment with offenders on site.
2. Judges must report disqualifications for inhumane treatment in show arena and list reason for disqualification on judge's card returned to AQHA.
3. Track horse injuries that occur at AQHA-approved shows, and create a form for a veterinary statement detailing injury.

Ernie - training update

Ernie is doing great so far in training, he will be heading to his new trainer very soon. Nonie is really excited about him and says if he doesn't make it to bring him home and that he will make a really cool roping horse. Ernie stops and turns easily, he has a good attitude, and wants to learn and please Nonie. We couldn't be happier with the reports on how he is adjusting to training life. He was ridden last week for the first time by Josh and did wonderful! Josh got on him and Ernie just stood there unfazed, he asked him to walk around the pen once and then gave him a soft squeeze and he just loped off like he was an old pro at riding. Nonie has done a great job with our boy and we ALL couldn't be happier right now. Woohoo, go Ernie!

I met with the deck contractor and asked for some changes, he gladfully complied with all my requests so if it stops raining soon they will finished it this week sometime. I will try and get some pictures of it so far, just that it is getting dark by the time I get home in the evening.

Talked to Nonie on Saturday as I was planning on picking up Ernie and bringing him home for some turnout time before he heads to cutting training. Except Nonie didn't want him to leave and talked me into another month with him. I will try and see him this weekend. He said he is doing REALLY good. I can't wait to see my boy.

I had double time working on Saturday, two farriers at once trimming everyone. They all did well and it gave me a chance to worm everyone at that time.

I need to do pregger shots this weekend on 5 mares. Man time flies, it is already time again. First three foals are due in March so we will have new babies soon. That means I need to move mares around and get them into foaling pastures where I can watch them closer.

Called the dealer for the new shed and had to change it to being constructed on site now because the darn deck is bigger than I thought and now a truck will not fit back there...he wasn't too happy and is charging me an extra $400. Oh well, such is life. I will be enjoying that deck a lot more than the shed.

Started getting all the paper work in order for this years breeding season, we will be breeding to a few outside stallions this year in addition to Bert breeding a few at home. Should be a fun and busy year, I hope we have better luck with this new repro guy doing all the mares. We had some stumbling blocks last year to say the least and it cost us thousands of dollars, no fault of our mares they were all ready to get bred.

Her name is Alota Jet Liberty (aka Libby) and she is headed to training soon and will be marketed as a quarter pony even though she is AQHA registered. Libby is a small 13.1 hands and with her sweet disposition she can tote some little cowboys and cowgirls around easily. This is Beloved Budha (aka Love) she is due in March 2009, the foal is sired by Rey Jays A Hick. I had a chance to visit with her prior owner at the NCHA Futurity and he told me that her oldest daughter by Mecom Blue is the #1 team penning horse in Venezuela. We own her 2008 blue roan filly and have big plans for her later. Love is a good name for her because she is truly a love to be around. I am so happy to of had the chance to purchase this well bred and cutting trained (just found out that good news) mare.

Weekend Update and Ranting

Gosh, I need a breather from all the work. I am not sure where to start because we have projects all going at the same time. I am feeling a bit stressed right now. I am a perfectionist, I have great attention to detail, and I have no patience for slackers, sloppy work, or bring your kids on the job site and ME having to watch them when I am busy.

Last week I meeting with more contractors and hire one to build the two story deck off the back of the house. They drop off supplies on Friday and build it Saturday and Sunday while I am at the farm. I am in contact with Nicole over the phone checking in a few times asking how it is going, she is giving me good reports so I focus on the projects at the farm that are also happening. I come home Sunday and to my dismay I see another kid on the job, and he is proceeding to sit in my yard and break my bricks with the hammer because he was bored and his daddy wasn't paying attention to him I guess. I see a total mess everywhere, my new $50 hose is covered in cement and hanging on my new siding! I am getting stressed just thinking about it all right now, I will have to end here and come back later and finish.

And no one in my family has ANY guts to tell these contractors not to bring their kids to work, not to abuse MY property, to clean their lunch and crap up and not LEAVE it all over when they leave! I am not their mother and I will tell them, I am glad someone in this family can speak.
